Taare Zamin Par!

Saw this movie recently, my company while watching this movie included my school friend better called a chaddi buddy!, another present colleague and one more fellow of our age.

I loved this movie!

Why?

Mainly because this movie made us recall our school days. It took us 15 years back in time, to the days of early rising, days of discipline, days of tiffin boxes and the days of competitions. To the days when everyone was taught to follow a dream and the days when what a right dream would be was also suggested. Right meant being successful, paying back and paying back well and paying back well quickly! It reminded us of the success formulas and patterns and why all thought that these patterns were critically important.

Taare Zameen Par is a story of a boy who could not follow these patterns. Simply because he did not see them. And therefore in spite of being a talent in his own world, he came to be regarded as a failure. And this was true especially because his father was a success story of a pattern and his elder brother too was almost certainly on the way to become one like his father.

Taare Zameen Par is a story also of a teacher who encourages his students to think out of the box, to write their own scripts. This teacher also motivates his colleagues to challenge themselves and explains to them, without any arguments, the importance of appreciating the difference!

The music of this movie is soulful and even when not chart busters the songs are great. Shankar Ehsaan and Loy prove their skills in the music and Prasoon Joshi exhibits the power of simplicity in his lyrics. Add to this the versatility of Shankar Mahadevan's voice and you have songs that you keep humming and singing if you can!

Beyond the message that it conveys, this movie excels in the art of movie making itself। No extra shots, no filler dialogues or songs and excellent camera work make this a perfect watch. Even as he relishes his directorial debut, Amir Khan will undoubtedly be under pressure to build on the success of Taare Zamin Par! I look forward to see more work from Amir and more often.

Why Blame China? We are a House Divided One of the articles published in the Chinese Institute for International and Strategic Studies has talked of the ease with which India can be divided into 20-30 parts in the future to prevent the country from rising as a strategic rival for the top spot in Asia and in the world. This article has invoked a lot of heat and debate in India. This was expected given the fact that China is India’s rival and a strategic adversary in most of the situations. It is also somewhat surprising given the norms governing international relations that no one speaks so blatantly of dividing the neighbour, even if one so desired, more so if you take pride in your ‘peaceful rise’ in international relations. Moreover, the policy of beggar thy neighbour is simply dated in the era of economic cooperation and nuclear weapons. Even as the analysts in India get angry about the perception of certain Chinese scholar about India, they must not lose sight of the fact that the

Civil Military Relations and Media

In India, civil military relations have been strained in the recent past due to a couple of instances. First, it was the date of birth controversy about the serving Chief of the Army. It involved a few missing documents and a legal tangle. Even as it was solved with all honours retained, other set of controversies seem to have emerged. These new controversies perhaps have been blown out of proportion, probably because the DoB controversy was still fresh in mind. During this second phase of the controversy, corruption, under-performance and under-preparedness came into picture.  However, the icing on the cake was the whole supposed coup expose by the Indian Express. Figment of imagination, undoubtedly at its worst, was at play in creating a script that would crate yet another dud like Agent Vinod! Has the media been mature on reportage and expose? Its one thing for a letter to be leaked, but its completely different for the media to publish it without even giving it a second thou
